UGC Secretary Manish Joshi said that it has come to the notice of the Commission that some universities are inviting new applications for admission to the MPhil programme, while it is important to note that MPhil is not a recognized degree. He said that Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022 clearly states that higher educational institutions will not offer any MPhil programme.
The regulation was notified in 2022
The Minimum Standards and Procedures Regulations for the award of PhD degree were notified by the UGC on November 7, 2022, after which admission to this course was banned. Earlier, to make a career in research, students used to take admission in MPhil before PhD. There was a perception among the students that after MPhil, one can easily get admission in PhD and research is also completed.
