New Delhi, In order to curb accidents at railway crossings, the Railway Board has approved the construction of one thousand Road Over Bridges (ROB) and Road Under Bridge (RUB). The department has set a target of making 1200 ROB-RUB in the current financial year. This will prevent accidents at railway crossings and provide relief to local residents from traffic jams.
A senior Railway Board official said that 3813 ROB-RUBs were constructed from 2009-2014. Thus, 763 ROB-RUBs were constructed annually at railway crossings. Whereas during 2014-2023, a record 10,867 ROBs were created. Railways made 1207 ROB-RUBs per year during this period. In this sequence, the department has set a target of making 1200 ROB-RUB during the current financial year 2023-24.
The official said that approval has been given to build 1000 ROBs and construction work has been started. The set target will be achieved on time. He told that changes have been made in the design of ROB-RUB being built at the railway crossing. Due to this, there will be no water logging below the RUB and traffic will not be affected.
At the same time, apart from stairs, provision of ramps will be made for pedestrians in the rail over bridge. With this, motorcyclists and cyclists will also be able to use the over bridge.
The creation of new design ROB-RUB will provide great convenience to the residents of towns, villages and industrial areas near the railway track.
A standing committee of Parliament, while appreciating the plan to build a Rail Under Bridge (RUB) by removing the railway crossing, has expressed concern over the water accumulating under the RUB.
The committee said that construction of RUB is a good initiative to prevent train accidents.
