New Delhi , Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated from ‘severe’ to ‘very severe’ category on Friday. In such a situation, Odd-Even Scheme can be implemented in the capital. Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was 437 at 7 am on Friday, while it was 419 at 4 pm on Thursday.
The 24-hour average AQI of the capital Delhi, recorded at 4 pm every day, was 401 on Wednesday, 397 on Tuesday, 358 on Monday, 218 on Sunday, 220 on Saturday and 279 on Friday. The credit for relatively good air quality last weekend goes to the rain, but in the days that followed, the level of air pollution increased due to heavy fireworks on Diwali night and increasing incidents of stubble burning in neighboring states.
The increase in air pollution was also due to unfavorable weather, especially due to calm air and low temperature, the pollutants could not be dispersed. AQI 374 was recorded in Ghaziabad, 404 in Gurugram, 313 in Greater Noida, 366 in Noida and AQI 415 in Faridabad.
Let us tell you that, AQI between zero to 50 is ‘good’, between 51 to 100 is ‘satisfactory’, between 101 to 200 is ‘moderate’, between 201 to 300 is ‘bad’, between 301 to 400 is ‘very bad’. , between 401 to 450 is considered ‘severe’ and above 450 is considered ‘very serious’.
Earlier this week, Environment Minister Gopal Rai had said that if AQI crosses 450 then the odd-even scheme can be implemented. This scheme has been implemented four times since 2016. This scheme was last implemented in 2019. The government had postponed the implementation of this scheme on Friday last week after significant improvement in air quality.
Recently, a joint study by Delhi government and IIT-Kanpur found that the contribution of vehicle smoke to the capital’s air pollution was 38 percent on Wednesday, which came down to 25 percent on Thursday.
An official of the Meteorological Department said that calm wind and low temperature are not allowing the pollutants to disperse and there is no possibility of relief for the next few days. He said that the level of air pollution can reduce due to improvement in wind speed from November 21.
