New Delhi , The General Body Meeting (UGBM) regarding the student union elections in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was called again at 9 pm tonight.
Earlier, there was ruckus in the meeting late Friday night and clash between student organizations. During this time, the leftist student organization and ABVP had accused each other of assault, in which many students were injured. Meanwhile the security guards looked helpless. Now, even for the second meeting, the JNU administration does not have any concrete security measures. The entire meeting is being allowed to be held relying on the security of 40 guards. Whereas around two thousand students participate in the meeting.
Left-led JNU Students Union issued a press release on Sunday accusing ABVP of disrupting and assaulting the UGBM. Left organization DSF says that in response to the announcement of commencement of student union elections, ABVP along with the administration worked to disrupt the UGBM and stop the democratic process of JNUSU elections 2024.
DSF said that we appeal to the students to gather in large numbers in the UGBM to be held at Sabarmati Dhaba and unite against ABVP.
ABVP said in a statement that the all-party organized university general body meeting was held at Sabarmati Maidan at 9:30 pm. Firstly, the leftist JNUSU used casteist abuses at the mic and sound workers because they did not want ABVP to participate in UGBM.
Only 40 guards will be present during the general body meeting, in which around two thousand students participate. Student union elections have not been held in JNU after 2019. After the demonstrations by student organizations, the university administration had issued a notification expressing its desire to hold elections. After this, a meeting of the students was held with the Dean of Students. In this, he was asked to form a panel to constitute a student election committee, because the elections in JNU are conducted by an autonomous committee formed by the students. UGBM was called to decide the names of the panel.
