Delhi AIIMS in collaboration with IIT developed indigenous implant for elbow replacement – Bollywood Keeda

New Delhi , AIIMS, in collaboration with IIT Delhi, has developed an indigenous implant used in elbow replacement. This implant has been designed keeping in mind the needs and size of Indian patients. This implant has been tested on dead bodies in AIIMS. If the test is successful, the use of the implant will start.

Its cadaveric trial has been completed. Now soon it will be used for trials on living people. After its success it will be used in patients. AIIMS spine surgeon Dr Bhavuk Garg said that apart from knee and hip replacement, people also need elbow replacement. Every month 10 such patients come to AIIMS who need elbow replacement.

AIIMS doctors say that the implants coming from abroad are prepared on the basis of patients from those countries. In such a situation, those implants face difficulty in fitting the patients in India. Titanium has been used to prepare it using indigenous technology. This is the safest and best metal for implants. There is no problem in this while getting MRI done.

Currently, the implant used in the elbow for this transplant is imported from abroad and is also quite expensive. It is prepared according to the size of patients from foreign countries, especially western countries. It also faces difficulty in fitting Indian patients.

The results of the implant prepared in collaboration with IIT Delhi have been better. Doctors say that during the trials conducted on dead bodies, its results were found to be better. In this, everything including quality, movement, fitting etc. has been tested. Its results have been better. Now it will be tested on patients for clinical assessment.

Surgery is done in AIIMS

Apart from elbow, surgeries for knee and hip replacements are also done at AIIMS. According to doctors, thousands of implants are required every year across the country. Their manufacturing in India will not only benefit the patients but will also improve the recovery and quality of life of the patients.
