Noida , Cyber criminals digitally arrested a female IT engineer resident of Sector-34, intimidated her and kept her hostage in her house for eight hours. The accused cheated the girl of Rs 11 lakh by threatening to implicate her in a money laundering case. In this matter the girl had filed a case in the cyber crime police station. On Thursday, the police revealed that this case is of digital arrest.

Police station in-charge Rita Yadav said that Seeja TA, resident of Dhavalgiri Society, Sector-34, received a call from an unknown number on November 13 and the caller claimed to be an officer of the Telephone Regulatory of India. The accused said that the SIM card was purchased using his Aadhar card. It has been used in money laundering.

Recently two crore rupees have been withdrawn using this SIM. After this the fraudsters transferred the call citing further investigation. After this, the girl was threatened and intimidated by allegedly posing as Mumbai Police on one side and Crime Branch and Customs officials on the other side through Skype call and the girl was monitored through Skype call for about eight hours and kept hostage in her house. During this time the girl was asked many types of questions and was not allowed to talk to anyone. In the end the fraudsters transferred Rs 11 lakh 11 thousand to the account. A case was registered in this matter in the cyber crime police station last week. When this matter was investigated, it turned out to be a case of digital arrest.

What is digital arrest?

According to cyber experts, in digital arrest a person is forced to remain constantly connected to the app downloaded on his mobile phone. By continuously chatting on the app, making audio-video calls, he is not allowed to log out of the app. During this, fraudsters tell the victim that a case has been registered against them, that a courier has arrived from abroad or that a crime has been committed using their personal documents.

Interrogation by impersonating a police officer

According to the police officer, the girl told that the accused kept her connected on Skype for eight hours. During this, he was interrogated by five police officers. They were all wearing uniform and there was a police flag on the wall behind them. The office of the accused was just like the office of real police officers. He told that the number from which the accused called the girl was from a police station in Lucknow. Used the phone number by spoofing (hacking) it.

Five cases came in ten days

The station in-charge said that within the last 10 days, cases of digital arrest of five people have come to light. When investigation was done after the victims lodged a complaint in the police station, digital arrest was confirmed.
