The festival of Bhai Dooj strengthens the love between brother and sister. This festival is celebrated two days after Diwali. In Hindu religion, two festivals are celebrated symbolizing the love between brother and sister – one is Rakshabandhan which is celebrated on the full moon day of Shravan month. In this the brother takes a pledge to protect his sister. The second festival is that of Bhai Dooj. In this, sisters pray for the long life of their brother. The festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second day of Shuklapaksha in the month of Kartik. On this day, sisters apply tilak to their brothers, wishing them good health and long life.

Religious significance of Bhaidooj
According to religious texts, on the day of Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Yamuna had received a boon from her brother Yama as a sign of respect, due to which Bhai Dooj is also known as Yama Dwitiya. In fact, according to Yamraj’s wishes, the person who worships Yama after taking bath in Yamuna on this day will not have to go to Yamalok after death. Yamuna, the daughter of Surya, is considered to be the goddess Swarupa who removes all the troubles. For this reason, there is special significance of taking bath in Yamuna river and worshiping Yamuna and Yamraj on the day of Yam Dwitiya. On this day, the sister applies tilak to her brother and with folded hands, prays to Yamraj for his long life.
