Qatar has released eight jailed former Indian Navy personnel who were awarded death sentence in October last year in an alleged espionage case. Seven of these have returned to India. Let us tell you that on the request of India, the death sentence was changed to life imprisonment.
The Ministry of External Affairs said, ‘The Government of India welcomes the release of eight Indian nationals working for Dahra Global Company detained in Qatar. Seven of those eight have returned to India. We appreciate the decision of the Emir of the State of Qatar to enable the release and return home of these citizens.
One of the former naval officers who returned to India said that his release would not have been possible without the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They raised slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ after landing at Delhi airport. All the former officers also thanked PM Modi and the Emir of Qatar.
Qatar’s court had sentenced eight former Indian Navy employees to death on October 27 last year. India had called this decision shocking. However, the Government of India had made it clear that it is considering all legal options in this matter. The surprising thing was that India’s relations with Qatar are considered good. Even after this, Qatar had sentenced eight Indians to death. Now the question arises that who are these eight Indians and what were they doing in Qatar and for how long were they in jail?
In fact, the eight Indians who were sentenced to death by the Qatar court were all former officers of the Indian Navy. These officers were in jail in Qatar since August last year. Neither Indian nor Qatari authorities made the charges against him public. Charges were filed against eight former Indian Navy servicemen on March 25 and they were being tried under Qatari law. His bail pleas had been rejected several times and the Court of First Instance in Qatar had ruled against him last year.
After this, India started efforts to free its marines, in which it first expressed grief over the death sentence given by the first instance court of Qatar, terming it as a “deep blow” and for it. After this, India promised to consider all legal options to help the eight people, including respected officers of its Navy. For this, India had first approached the Qatar court against the death sentence of the sailors. Subsequently, on December 28, the Qatari court commuted the death sentences of the Indian marines and sentenced them to different periods of jail.
The families of Indian Navy veterans in Qatar were worried after hearing the news of their sentencing in India. The family had requested for his release and his safe return to the country, after which the Ministry of External Affairs had assured them that all diplomatic channels would be mobilized and legal assistance would be arranged to bring him back to the country.
Earlier this year, a Qatari court commuted their death sentences to eight former Indian Navy personnel after an appeal in January and gave them 60 days to appeal against their individual jail sentences, the Ministry of External Affairs said. Had given. The court initially delivered the judgment in the form of an oral order and External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a regular media briefing that the legal team assisting him of eight people had received a copy of the judgment, but it was a “confidential document”. . After this the court ordered the release of eight brave men of India.
